Evaluation of the physical basis of the de facto state in the case of South Ossetia using Bjørn Møller's definition of statehood.

This bachelor thesis deals with de facto states, precisely the case of South Ossetia, which it assesses in terms of its statehood. Bjørn Møller's definition of statehood, which distinguishes between three dimensions of the state - institutional, conceptual, and physical basis - was used to assess the South Ossetian case. This bachelor thesis addresses the physical base dimension: the economy, territory, and population. The thesis also uses the approach of strong, weak, and failing states, which is used to define the indicators more precisely under study for each component of the physical base. The thesis is divided into three main sections. In the first theoretical part, the theoretical approaches used in the thesis are introduced, and with their help, the indicators under study are proposed. The second part then presents an overview of key historical events, which provides the necessary context for the third part, which deals with the physical base of South Ossetia itself. The aim of the paper is then to answer the question of whether South Ossetia can meet the requirements placed on the state in the dimension of the physical base.
Georgian-Russian relations in the period 2004-2011 The struggle for the Georgian Independence

This master thesis deals with the mapping and analysis of Russian-Georgian relations in the period between 2004-2011. It focuses primarily on the development of relations after the onset of the new Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili and after his transformation of Georgian Policy. The work is divided into chronological historical axis of events, from the history of Georgia and Georgian people, the author gets to the problems of August war in 2008. The main objective of this work is to find the causes of the war between Russia and Georgia, to map out its long-standing hostile relations and try to find its solutions. Starting point of this work is the assumption that Georgia and Russia have always been nations culturally very similar and therefore its friendly relations are essential for the regulation of conflicts on Georgia's borders. Russia as a powerful neighbor, has always had a superiority over Georgia. Therefore, in subsequent chapters is enhanced the need for intervention by international organizations such as NATO, OSCE, EU, etc. issues in Russian-Georgian conflict, in order to offset the forces of power on both sides. The European Union and the unrecognized states in Georgia

This thesis considers the role of the European Union in dealing with the problem of unrecognized states on the territory of Georgia. The aim of the thesis is to find out which tools the EU employs in solving this problem. Unrecognized states are rejected as partners of the international community, thus they lack the basis for entering international relations, the external sovereignty. Nevertheless, this doesn't prevent them from functioning internally and offering their citizens functions similar to ordinary sovereign states. Since the unrecognized states in Georgia, Abkhazia and South Ossetia, are considered parts of Georgia, this thesis will also examine how the EU employs its tools in Georgia and in the unrecognized entities and the influence of the non-recognition of these states on the engagement of the EU in them. Abkhazia and South Ossetia were created shortly after the collapse of the Soviet Union and the following ethnopolitical conflicts in the South Caucasus. Since then, the unrecognized states have developed and built a national identity which is opposed to the former central state, Georgia. Peacekeeping forces as an instrument of enforcement of influence abroad: South Ossetia case

The bachellor thesis deals with Russian use of the Joint Control Commission in South Ossetia by which they aim to preserve its influence in Georgia, that is being one of the post-soviet republics. The first part of the thesis is focusing on the historical context of this event, which includes the decription of the origin of the Joint Control Commission as well as what responsibilities and jurisdictions had an impact on the participating states of the commission. The second part of the thesis is presented as a case study of the RussoGeorgian war in 2008, where are shown specific examples of the Russian use of its peacekeeping forces, which were depoloyed to maintain the influence abroad. The thesis concludes by providing an outline that answers whether Russia managed maintain or even boost its power in Georgia by using the peacekeeping units.
International regulation of de facto states

Over the course of history, the organisation of human societies has gone through several evolutionary stages. Their peak, primarily in Europe, took the form of states as polities structured around an ethnical basis-nation states. In many cases, their rise and downfall could be rather violent which led to growing social instability. Therefore, international communities began looking for mechanisms to regulate these processes. From the perspective of international law, it was necessary mainly to define the term state and codify the requirements an entity had to meet in order to be considered one. The Montevideo Convention established an elementary quartet, necessitating the presence of a population, territory, executive power and the ability to fully participate in international relationships, i.e. possess external sovereignty. These four aspects, however, still did not entirely suffice which is why secondary requirements kept being inconsistently added, addressing primarily the entity's inner character and its attitude to, for example, upholding universal human rights or minority rights. Third parties' role in the frozen conflicts of the South Caucasus. The Cases of Nagorno-Karabakh, South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

The thesis aims to discuss effectiveness of the international conflict resolution in the region of the South Caucasus, analyzing the challenges to international efforts to solve the three conflict cases: the conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh is among the frozen disputes in the region, the others Abkhazia and the South Ossetia are nominally independent states, however de facto occupied by Russia. It is the fact that three regional players Russia, Turkey and Iran and global players Russia, US, EU have different type of impacts to conflict settlements in the region which directly relate to their political and economic interests. Therefore, after two decades of mediation by powerful states provided no final resolution with numerous attempts at mediation, wherein the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) has taken the lead. The complicated and interdepended relations of states make this region highly sensitive area for war and peace in the world theatrical chessboard. Author also analyzes the effectiveness of conflict management between the parties by focusing on conflicts in the South Caucasus region mentioning their historical, political, security and ethnic dimensions, where international organizations, namely OSCE, UN, EU involve.

Fragmentation of political space in Caucasus: Case studies of secessionist territories of Abkhazia and South Ossetia

The main objective of this thesis deals with the efforts of de facto states of Abkhazia and South Ossetia on secesionism. The first part studies the historical roots of dispute among Abkhazia, South Ossetia and Georgia. Mutual disputes have led to an armed conflict in the early nineties after which Abkhazia and South Ossetia broke away from Georgia and began seeking the international recognition. After the Georgian-Russian war in 2008 they managed to achieve the partial recognition. The biggest ally of the afore-mentioned countries seems to be Russia which provides them with political, economical and military support. The thesis also analyzes the role of Russia in the conflict and its subsequent implementation. The final chapter focuses on the evaluation of Abkhazia's and South Ossetia's statehood.
